Types of Electrical Voltage Measuring Instruments


Just as the name suggests, an electric voltage meter has the main function of measuring the electric voltage on an object or electrical circuit. As each object usually has different power requirements, therefore the voltage meter equipment required will also differ. Different object and electric voltage will need its own specific voltage meter. The following are various kinds of electrical voltage measuring devices that you need to know.


1. Ammeter


Ammeter is a measuring instrument used to measure electric current, be it alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC), in a circuit. Electric current is usually measured in amperes, so ammeters are often referred to as amperes. In practice, ammeters are also often used to measure electric current in small units up to the range of milliamperes and microamperes. The instrument used to measure milliamperes is called a milliammeter, while a microampere measuring device is called a microammeter.


2. Voltmeter


A voltmeter, also known as a voltage meter, is a device used to measure the voltage and potential difference between two points of an electronic circuit or electrical circuit. Usually, voltmeters are applied to alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) circuits. The voltage measured by a voltmeter can be calibrated in units of volts, millivolts (0.0001 volts), to kilovolts (1,000 volts).


3. Ohmmeter


An ohmmeter can be defined as an electronic device used to calculate the electrical resistance of a circuit in ohms. Electrical resistance itself is calculated to find out how much resistance an object has to allow the flow of electric current to pass through it. There are different types of ohmmeters available with different sensitivity levels such as microohms, megaohms, to milliohms.


4. Wattmeter


Wattmeter is a measuring instrument used to measure the electrical power of electrically powered electronic devices. The use of this tool is intended to monitor how much power is consumed in an electronic device, to better manage electrical energy savings. Electrical power measured by a wattmeter will be displayed in watts, but most of these tools can also measure other types of voltage such as volts, amperes, power factor, and kWh.


5. Multimeter


A multimeter, sometimes also known as a volt/ohmmeter, is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one unit. Typical multimeters can include some capability to measure voltage, current, and electrical resistance. Generally, these tools are available in digital and analog versions.
